Kathy Karaboyas Malamis will be presenting “The Duty To Settle” at the Central Regional Adjusters Conference for PLRB in Des Moines, Iowa on September 9 and 10, 2008.
John Huston will be speaking at the 20th Annual Product Liability Conference September 9-11, 2008 in Madison, WI. The program will be held at the University of Wisconsin Engineering School.
The California offices of TSM&P will host their annual Hot Topics In Insurance Law Seminar for clients on September 18, 2008 at the Center Club in Costa Mesa, California. Speaking at the seminar will be Katherine Liner, Mary McPherson, Linda Bondi Morrison, David Simantob, Evan Sorensen, Michaela Sozio, Paul White and Elizabeth Musser. The co-chairs of the seminar are Linda Tai Hoshide and Katherine Liner.
Tom Hanekamp will be speaking on the topic of “E-Discovery Update: Managing Costs and Managing the Process” at the Corporate Counsel Symposium sponsored by the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC). The Symposium will take place in Irving, Texas September 23-25, 2008.
Andrew Boris will speak at the American Conference Institute's forum on Reinsurance Claims & Arbitration September 24-25, 2008 in New York City. He will specifically address bad faith and reinsurance.

Tom Hanekamp spoke at the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC) annual meeting in Canada in July. The presentation, “Overview of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis and the Resulting Litigation” took place at a meeting of the Financial Institutions subsection.
Paul White also spoke at the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC) annual meeting in Canada in July. The presentation, “Defending Against the Use of Litigation Conduct as Evidence of Bad Faith” took place at a meeting of the Extra-Contractual Liability/Insurance Coverage/Reinsurance, Excess and Surplus Lines/Life, Health and Disability/Insurance Industry section.
Partner, Joe Monteleone spoke at the Errors & Omissions Insurance ExecuSummit in New York July 22-23, 2008. Joe’s presentation was entitled “From Subprime Crisis to Credit Crunch to Recession: The Liability and Coverage Implications for Professional Liability and E&O Insurers,” and covered the Subprime crisis, the liability exposures of the professionals and financial institutions affected by the crisis, coverage issues that have arisen under certain professional liability and E&O policies and ways that one can mitigate similar risks and exposures in the future.
Shaun Baldwin presented at Stanford Law School at the 36th Annual International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) Trial Academy Conference. She spoke on "Preserving the Record for Appeal."
Partner Jill Jennings Drzewiecki presented "Understanding the Current CGL Policy" on June 27, 2008 in Naperville, Illinois in conjunction with Lorman Education Services. This presentation helped people get up to speed on important issues affecting insurance coverage for environmental, toxic tort and mass tort losses.
Tom Hanekamp served on the faculty at the Litigation Management College of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC) at Emory University in Atlanta from June 15 to June 19. This five-day workshop was designed to enhance claim professionals’ litigation management skills.
Kathy Karaboyas Malamis presented “Avoiding Bad Faith Claims For The Insurance Professional: Complying With The Unfair Claim Settlement Practices Act” at a National Business Institute seminar on June 13th in Chicago.
New York Partner, Barry Bassis moderated a panel discussion on Excess/Primary Relationship Issues in D&O Claims at the CLE program "Current Issues in D&O Liability & Insurance in 2008" on June 6, 2008. This event was co-sponsored by the Insurance Committee of the Bar Association of the City of New York and The Insurance Federation of New York.
Dale Kurth spoke on “The Basics of Trademark Law” at a seminar entitled, “What Every Lawyer Should Know About Intellectual Property,” sponsored by the Illinois State Bar Association’s Center for CLE. The seminar took place in Chicago on May 5 and in downstate Collinsville, Illinois on May 12, 2008. Dale covered the basics of what a trademark is and the proper procedures for sending and receiving cease and desist letters, trademark priority basics and trademark litigation under federal and state law.
A free one hour Webinar was held by Lexis Nexis on May 15, 2008. Attendees received CLE credit. The topic was “Cutting Edge Coverage: Developments Impacting Directors’ and Officers’ Liability Insurance Policy Drafting, Negotiation and Claims”. The presenters, Carrie E. Cope and Joseph P. Monteleone, provided an overview of developments impacting directors’ and officers’ liability insurance coverage from the aspects of policy drafting, broker negotiations and D&O claims.
John Huston, a partner in our Chicago office specializing in tort litigation with special concentration on complex products liability, and architects' and engineers' professional liability spoke at the "Legal Issues for Illinois Professional Engineers" on the topic of appearing as a witness in a civil case on May 15, 2008.
Tom Hanekamp spoke as part of an in-house program at an insurance company on the topic of E-Discovery on April 10th. Tom was part of a panel of speakers on the subject presented by the E-Discovery Task Force of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC). Tom serves as a Co-Chair of the Task Force.
Wen-Shin Cheng spoke at the Defense Research Institute’s “Insurance Coverage and Claims Institute” seminar. The seminar was held April 9-11 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Her session was titled, “Emerging Advertising and Personal Injury Issues".
