William Michael Mooney practices in first and third-party property matters. He has extensive litigation experience representing insurance carriers and insureds as both outside counsel and in-house counsel. Mike has handled a broad array of property matters including many large fire losses, flood losses, grease fire losses and automatic building sprinkler system malfunctions. Mike has been sought after to perform cause and origin site inspections with experts and adjusters for fire losses and has been called upon to perform a site inspection in a case involving alterations of natural flow of surface waters amongst multiple commercial and residential developments. He has overseen expert metallurgical and engineering testing of aluminum alloys in a case involving the sudden loss of over one hundred electrical light poles in Western Illinois during a winter storm. Mike has a broad experience handling third party construction defect cases between owners, general contractors and subcontractors and has defended contractors against claims of negligently caused fires, water loss, product failures and other casualties. He has been involved with multiple first-party large-loss cases involving collapse, as well as subrogation cases involving similar issues. He has secured subrogation judgments in multiple cases involving employee conversion of employer assets and negligent independent accounting procedures. Mike has also successfully briefed and argued motions for summary declaratory judgment in various types of property losses, and also significant automobile losses including: permissive users, fraud cases involving staged theft, non-owned autos and a major case involving an under aged insured driving a non-owned automobile under the influence resulting in multiple fatality auto accident.
Prior to joining the firm, Mike was an associate at Heytow & Warnick, P.C. in Chicago. In addition to his law practice, Mike has participated in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Island four times and has won multiple medals, including first place at the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club Hobelman Regatta in 2008.
